Alcohol Research? No thanks!

Researchers working with ARC Wessex have been awarded some money to try to understand why people that drink too much alcohol don't want to be part of research into the addiction.

Entitled 'Alcohol Research? No thanks!' the project will run until September 2026. Dr's Skaiste Linceviciute and Stephanie Hughes are part of the ARC Wessex Mental Health Hub, which looks at the many aspects of mental wellbeing, including addiction and loneliness.

Research will speak to people who have had alcohol problems to find out their experiences and what stopped them wanting to take part in studies into alcohol. The results will be turned into a video.

Dr Stephanie Hughes helped secure the Leverhulme small research grant from the British Academy:

People can really struggle with alcohol. In the UK, about 81% of adults drink alcohol, and roughly 24% drink at levels that put their health at increasing or higher risk — yet many are reluctant to talk about it, let alone take part in research. We hope this project can lift the lid on the barriers to talking about alcohol use.
